What is FareGate?
FareGate is an iPhone app that puts the apps you choose behind a toll of your own flashcard reviews. Ten cards buys fifteen minutes.
How does FareGate stop scrolling and turn it into Anki reviews?
When you open an app you chose to gate, the iOS shield offers a route to FareGate’s review session. Answer ten cards, and FareGate opens that app for fifteen minutes.
Can I change how many cards a gate costs?
Not today. The v1 fare is fixed at ten cards for fifteen minutes for everyone, and per-app tolls are on the roadmap.
Is FareGate the same as a generic quiz-pack app?
No. Generic quiz packs do not move your deck; FareGate uses your own cards and can return your grades to your Anki collection through its desktop bridge.
Your Anki collection
Does FareGate use my real Anki deck?
Yes. Install FareGate Bridge in desktop Anki with AnkiWeb add-on code 29632925, pair it with your iPhone, and FareGate syncs your own cards, templates, and media.
Do FareGate reviews sync back to Anki?
Yes, when your iPhone is paired with the desktop bridge. The bridge replays each grade and review time through Anki’s own scheduler API, which lets Anki compute the resulting FSRS state instead of FareGate writing raw review rows.
What do I need to set up FareGate with Anki?
You need an iPhone running iOS 18 or later, desktop Anki on macOS or Windows, FareGate Bridge, and a FareGate account. Enter the phone-issued pairing code in Tools → FareGate: Pair with phone… in Anki; the first sync then starts.
What works without desktop Anki?
You can try the full gate loop with FareGate’s built-in starter deck, or import a desktop Anki .apkg file into a local collection. Without the desktop bridge, those reviews stay in FareGate and do not sync back to Anki.
Screen Time and privacy
Does iOS Screen Time work with Anki in FareGate?
Yes. FareGate uses Apple’s Family Controls permission to shield the apps you select and lift the shield for earned windows, while its own review and sync system handles your Anki cards.
Can FareGate see which apps I gate or what I do in them?
No. Apple gives FareGate opaque tokens for the apps you choose, so FareGate does not learn their names and never sees your screen or the contents of those apps.
Does FareGate send my card content to analytics or logs?
No. Card content never enters analytics, logs, or error reports, and it is never pooled or used to train models.
What data leaves my iPhone?
When you sign in and use bridge sync, FareGate sends account and device identifiers, the pairing code and sync watermark, review grades and times, and your collection snapshot with referenced media to your private FareGate space. Subscription status and non-card-content product measurements also leave the device; a standalone collection can stay local.
Limits and plans
Is FareGate impossible to bypass?
No. An emergency pass always exists, opens the selected app for fifteen minutes, and records the pass in your own stats.
Which devices can run FareGate today?
FareGate runs on iPhone today. A Mac companion is in development; there is no Mac or browser release available today.
What does the Free tier include?
Free costs $0 forever and includes one gated app, .apkg import, bridge sync and write-back, the core review engine, daily and weekly stats, and the emergency pass. Sync is part of Free.
What does FareGate Pro cost, and what does it include?
In the United States, Pro costs $4.99 per month or $34.99 per year, with a seven-day free trial. Pro adds up to 50 gated apps, Morning Gate, the Live Activity countdown, and month-and-year stats.
